The Social Dilemma, 2020 - ★★
This documentary seems pretty problematic to me. It’s a very biased view of a very complex problem, in fact of many different complex problems. Yes, a lot of the things said about social networks and algorithmic environments is true, but it seems like every structural challenge to current western societies is attributed to monopolist social networks in a very black-and-white fashion when you could argue they are but a symptom of much deeper problems. I feel like lots of documentaries from the US tend to be rather narrow and avoid the actual complexity of their themes and maybe that’s what makes them more appealing to a larger audience. But when you have to employ a huge chunk of fictional drama in between interesting interview bits then maybe your argument is not as convincing as it should be. So in the end the dilemma to me seems to be that we have to employ an older commercial mass medium (tv/streaming) to challenge a new one (social media) when really it is the environments that they have created that seem to be at the heart of the problem. I’m not sure how to put that on film, but they surely didn’t succeed here.
